Locations Affected: Laos
Tracking Id: RINTP4795292904
Description:
As per reports, the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has reported elevated Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 levels across Laos on Wednesday (08 April), exceeding national safety standards nationwide. The following are additional details:
• PM2.5 concentrations have reached 196 micrograms per cubic meter in Vientiane, while multiple provinces have recorded levels above 100 micrograms per cubic meter, exceeding the safety threshold of 50 micrograms per cubic meter.
• A total of 1,306 fire hotspots have been identified nationwide, with the highest concentrations in Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, and Savannakhet, primarily linked to biomass burning, forest fires, and transboundary haze.
• Authorities have issued advisories urging the public to avoid outdoor burning, wear protective masks, and limit outdoor activities during the dry season.
• Continued disruptions are likely due to persistent air pollution, ongoing fire activity, and seasonal haze conditions.
Impact:
Air quality deterioration is likely to increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups, while reduced visibility and haze conditions may impact road and air transport operations. Outdoor activities may be limited, and prolonged exposure may affect daily mobility and public safety.
Recommendations:
• Advised to limit outdoor exposure, particularly during peak pollution periods.
• Advised to use protective masks and maintain indoor air quality where possible.
• Advised to remain abreast of further updates via the official website of the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry at https://www.maf.gov.la/
