Description:

As per reports, the Russian Ministry of Health announced a proposed revision to the National Immunization schedule on Thursday (04 December), considering the postponement of mass vaccinations against four infections.

• The ministry’s proposal could delay the inclusion of meningococcal, chickenpox, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and rotavirus vaccines by one to four years, with rotavirus vaccination potentially moved from 2025 to 2029 and chickenpox from 2027 to 2031.
• The key reason cited for the postponement is a new requirement for these vaccines to be manufactured via a full domestic production cycle within Russia before inclusion in the national schedule.
• The plan is part of the infectious disease immunization strategy through 2035. A ministry press service statement confirmed that implementation phases are aligned with establishing full-cycle domestic production.

Background:

These diseases pose significant public health risks. Meningococcal disease can cause severe meningitis and septicemia with high fatality rates. Chickenpox, while often mild in children, can lead to severe complications in adults and vulnerable populations. HPV is a primary cause of cervical and other cancers, and rotavirus is a leading cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young children.

Impact:

• Businesses with expatriate employees or staff on international assignments in Russia may face increased health risks for personnel and dependents due to delayed access to these specific vaccinations.
• Prolonged outbreaks of the affected diseases, particularly in major business hubs, may lead to increased employee absenteeism due to illness or childcare obligations.
• Corporate health and travel risk management plans requiring these immunizations may need revision.

Recommendations:

It is advised to monitor the official website of the Russian Ministry of Health (https://minzdrav.gov.ru/) for official updates on the immunization schedule and the website of the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (https://www.rospotrebnadzor.ru/) for epidemiological updates.
