Description:

As per reports, the Independent Flight Attendants’ Organisation (UFO) has announced a cabin crew strike at Deutsche Lufthansa AG and its regional subsidiary Lufthansa CityLine, scheduled for Friday (10 April). The strike is set to commence at 0001 hours local time (2201 hours UTC on Thursday, 09 April) and run until 2200 hours local time (2000 hours UTC) on Friday (10 April).

• All Deutsche Lufthansa AG departures from Frankfurt and Munich airports are expected to be affected during the strike window on Friday (10 April).
• All Lufthansa CityLine departures from Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Bremen, Stuttgart, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Hanover airports are also expected to be affected during the same period.
• Lufthansa has indicated it expects 80 to 90 percent of its flights to be affected, with flight cancellations confirmed as unavoidable. Cancellations are expected to be loaded into booking systems by the morning of Thursday (09 April).
• The strike was sanctioned following a ballot held at the end of March 2026, in which approximately 94 percent of Lufthansa mainline cabin crew and approximately 99 percent of Lufthansa CityLine cabin crew voted in favour of industrial action.
• UFO has cited deadlocked negotiations over the framework collective agreement at Lufthansa, the airline’s unwillingness to negotiate a social collective agreement at CityLine, and concerns over approximately 800 jobs at risk following the planned cessation of CityLine flight operations in 2027 as the primary reasons for the strike.
• Flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, SWISS, Air Dolomiti, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss, and Lufthansa City Airlines will not be affected by the strike action.
• Lufthansa currently expects to largely return to its regular flight schedule from Saturday (11 April) onwards.

Impact:

• Significant flight cancellations and passenger delays are anticipated at Frankfurt and Munich airports on Friday (10 April), with knock-on disruptions likely across connecting itineraries at major European and international destinations served by Lufthansa’s hub network.
• Corporate travel plans relying on Lufthansa services through Frankfurt and Munich on Friday (10 April) may be severely disrupted, including time-sensitive business trips, trade delegations, and international meetings. Travel managers are advised to activate contingency routing options through alternative hubs or carrier groups unaffected by the action.
• Air cargo operations at Frankfurt and Munich may face interruption, with potential delays to time-sensitive freight shipments carried on Lufthansa services during the strike window.
• Increased passenger volumes are anticipated on unaffected carriers and on Deutsche Bahn rail services, as displaced travellers seek alternative connections. Affected passengers holding German domestic Lufthansa flight tickets may exchange these for Deutsche Bahn tickets free of charge.

Recommendations:

Travellers with Lufthansa bookings on Friday (10 April) are advised to check the current status of their flight before proceeding to the airport and to ensure their contact details are stored in their booking to receive automatic notifications from Lufthansa.
