• Claiming that US mediation played a key role, Trump praised the leadership of both countries for choosing “common sense and great intelligence” to de-escalate the crisis.
• Additionally, Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister (PM) and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also endorsed Trump’s claim, stating that Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.
• It is also reported that the Pakistan Director General of Military Operations initiated the call on Saturday (10 May) afternoon, after which the discussions took place.
• Further, the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that engagements with senior officials of the neighboring countries were done in the last two days, including with Vice President JD Vance, for the last two days to reach this decision. Background:
A military strike, “Operation Sindoor” was conducted on Wednesday (07 May) by the Indian Armed Forces in parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and border towns of Pakistan, targeting terrorist hideouts after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April.
The precision strike was non-escalatory in nature and deliberately did not target any military or civilian infrastructure. However, subsequent retaliations have resulted in a significant escalation in the situation, with both militaries engaging each other. Since then, there have been blackouts in north and northwestern states of India, extended shutdown of airports, cancellations of flights and trains, and closure of educational institutions based on situational developments and requirements.
Impact:
• The immediate ceasefire agreement will likely create a turning point in reducing cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
• Ceasefire enforcement will likely reduce civilian casualties and displacement along the Line of Control (LoC), especially in border districts of both India and Pakistan.
• However, owing to tensions between India and Pakistan, ceasefire violations cannot be entirely ruled out. In such an event, businesses must stay vigilant for updates, as the situation may evolve quickly.
• Airports and other transport hubs in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat that are currently closed may eventually resume normal operations, depending on the situational developments in the coming days. Similar developments are also expected in Pakistan’s Punjab and Sindh provinces.
• Further developments after the ceasefire agreements and details are awaited.
Recommendations:
Avoid high-risk regions, particularly Jammu & Kashmir, border areas near Pakistan, and any areas under curfew or heightened military presence. Diversify supply chains to reduce dependency on cross-border logistics that may be affected during conflicts. Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and have a personal emergency kit ready.
