Description:

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a weather outlook indicating hot to very hot conditions with haze across Thailand from Wednesday (08 April) to Tuesday (14 April). According to the department, a heat-induced low-pressure cell covering upper Thailand will lead to persistent high temperatures and hazy conditions during daytime hours across much of the country.

From Friday (10 April) to Tuesday (14 April), the country is expected to remain hot to very hot with hazy daytime conditions, while rainfall activity is expected to decrease across most regions.

• In the northern region, weather conditions are forecast to remain hot to very hot with haze, with isolated thundershowers and occasional gusty winds particularly in the western and upper parts of the region. From Friday to Tuesday (10 – 14 April), similar hot and hazy conditions are expected to persist with occasional isolated showers. Minimum temperatures in the region may range between 21 and 28 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may reach 37 to 42 degrees Celsius.
• The northeastern region is expected to experience hot to very hot weather with haze throughout the forecast period, with isolated thundershowers mainly affecting the lower part of the region. Temperatures may range between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius at minimum and 38 to 42 degrees Celsius at maximum.
• In the central region, hot to very hot weather with haze is forecast throughout the period. Isolated thundershowers are expected mainly in western parts of the region, particularly during the earlier part of the forecast period. Minimum temperatures may range between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may reach 37 to 42 degrees Celsius.
• The eastern region is also expected to experience hot to very hot weather with haze and isolated thundershowers, particularly in the lower areas of the region. Temperatures may range between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius at minimum and 34 to 40 degrees Celsius at maximum.
• In the southern region along the eastern coast, hot conditions with isolated thundershowers are expected throughout the forecast period. Minimum temperatures may range between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may reach 34 to 39 degrees Celsius.
• Along the western coast of southern Thailand, hot conditions with isolated thundershowers are also forecast throughout the period. Minimum temperatures may range between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may reach 34 to 38 degrees Celsius.
• In Bangkok and surrounding metropolitan areas, hot to very hot weather with haze is forecast for the entire period. Minimum temperatures may range between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may reach 36 to 41 degrees Celsius.

Impact:

Isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds may create short-term disruptions to outdoor activities, local transportation, and maritime operations, particularly in coastal areas. Sudden rainfall combined with strong winds may reduce road visibility, affect motorcycle travel, and cause temporary water accumulation on roads in urban areas.

Additionally, lightning and strong winds associated with thunderstorms may cause localized disruptions such as minor power outages, falling branches, or temporary structural damage, particularly in areas with weak infrastructure or exposed coastal locations. The presence of hazy conditions and elevated particulate matter levels across northern and upper regions may also affect air quality and public health.

Recommendations:

It is advised to wear protective masks such as N95 respirators when outdoors and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, particularly for those with respiratory conditions or heightened health vulnerabilities.

Travellers travelling during periods of thunderstorms or strong winds are advised to exercise caution, reduce driving speeds, and maintain safe distances from other vehicles, as sudden rainfall may reduce visibility and create slippery road conditions.
