Impact Level: Notification
Locations Affected: Chao Phraya River, Samut Songkhram, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Thailand
Tracking Id: RINTP2918267361
Description:
As per reports, the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued a warning of high tidal surges along the Chao Phraya River and nearby areas from Thursday (04 December) to Friday (12 December).
Water levels are expected to peak at approximately 1.70-2.00 meters above mean sea level at Phra Chulachomklao Fort and surrounding locations between 0500 hours (local time) to 1200 hours (local time) daily. These tides are roughly 0.30 meters above the critical water level.
Background:
The high tides are caused by an eastern wind system entering the Gulf of Thailand, combined with water flow from upstream areas.
Impact:
• Low-lying ‘gap areas’ outside permanent flood protection dikes and temporary embankments in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, and Samut Songkhram may experience temporary inundation during peak high tides. Water accumulation could reach several tens of centimeters in some locations.
• Local streets and access roads in affected communities may experience slow-moving traffic or minor congestion due to shallow floodwater, especially near embankments, canals, and drainage outlets.
• Public transport services operating through these low-lying zones may experience slight delays during peak water periods. Bus stops, taxi routes, and ferry services along the Chao Phraya may require temporary adjustments to maintain safety.
• Utility infrastructure in these areas, including drainage systems, pumping stations, and roadside electrical boxes, may be temporarily impacted, requiring monitoring and preventive measures by local authorities.
