Impact:

The following are the government actions taken nationwide:

• Travel restrictions: Currently there are no restrictions in place for either domestic or international travel due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
• Kerala Health Minister Veena George has stated that special care should be implemented as the virus remains more severe among the elderly and individuals with other diseases. Further stating that the Omicron JN.1 variants LF.7 and XFG were the most common in Kerala, while these variants are not as severe, they have a high potential for spreading the disease. Earlier, the minister chaired a meeting with the state unit of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), following this, all hospitals have been instructed to conduct COVID-19 tests for those with symptoms, including cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath. Further instructions have been directed to ensure oxygen availability; unnecessary visits to hospitals should be avoided. Those with symptoms such as a cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath should wear masks, and wearing masks is made mandatory in hospitals.
• The Delhi government has issued an advisory instructing hospitals to maintain preparedness with respect to bed availability, oxygen supply, essential medicines, and vaccines. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new vaccine for people over the age of 65, as well as people between the ages of 12-64 who have co-morbidities.
• The Madhya Pradesh Health Department has instructed hospitals across the state to review and strengthen their preparedness, including ensuring the availability of hospital beds, oxygen, essential medicines, and enhancing means of testing COVID-19 in the district hospital and ICU facilities. Health authorities continue to maintain a heightened surveillance, with active testing underway at local hospitals. Government facilities in Indore are prepared with over 13,000 beds, including 6,000 equipped for oxygen and ICU support, to handle any potential increase in cases.
• The Health Department of Himachal Pradesh has issued an alert and stepped-up precautionary measure, despite the state currently reporting no active cases. The National Health Mission (NHM), Himachal Pradesh, has directed all Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), medical college principals, and medical superintendents to enhance hospital preparedness.
• The Uttarakhand Health Department has deployed staff along the Chardham Yatra route as a precaution due to the influx of pilgrims. Genome sequencing is being conducted on recent cases to monitor for new variants.
• In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Health has recently conducted high-level review meetings with national agencies to assess readiness and enhance response strategies. An Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) has intensified monitoring, contact tracing, and isolation measures as part of containment efforts.
• Following the news of a COVID-19 fatality in Tamil Nadu, an exclusive COVID-19 treatment ward has been opened at Government Royapettah Hospital in Chennai, and new wards would be set up if the situation arises. The State Public Health Department has urged the people to take precautions and follow COVID guidelines, including washing hands and maintaining social distance.
• The National Institute of Virology (NIV) and BJ Medical College, Pune, are conducting genome sequencing of COVID samples. Currently, ILI (Influenza-like Illness) and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infection) surveys are underway in Maharashtra for COVID-19.
• In Andhra Pradesh, the people are advised to avoid large gatherings and social distancing norms are to be strictly followed at public places like railway stations, bus stands, and airports statewide. These include wearing masks in crowded areas, and that senior citizens and pregnant women should avoid stepping out unnecessarily, and international passengers must undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing upon arrival in the state. Medical officers are directed to keep PPE kits, masks, and related supplies readily available and to remain fully alert in both rural and urban healthcare facilities. Officials are also instructed to carry out extensive awareness campaigns at the village and mandal levels, ensuring that citizens adopt necessary preventive measures and understand the importance of health protocols.
• While no advisory has been issued by the West Bengal Health Department yet, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to spread awareness about precautionary measures against the virus. The civic body will put up banners in all its health units across the city — urging people to wear masks, wash their hands and maintain social distancing protocol, it is learnt.

Health workers in all wards of the city have been directed to collect information about people with COVID-19 symptoms, besides routine data gathering on malaria and dengue. The workers have been instructed to isolate any person with influenza-like symptoms and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI).
• The Maharashtra government on Monday (02 June) issued revised guidelines for Covid-19 management across the state. All healthcare facilities have been directed to prepare and test five percent of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) patients. The order has been issued by the health department to all municipal corporations, zilla parishads and district administration.

The health department in Maharashtra has directed to conduct mock drills to ensure the efficiency of Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) oxygen plants and check overall oxygen preparedness. The department has directed that the preparedness of hospitals at the district, sub-district level as well as in medical colleges, other educational or tertiary institutions, municipal or municipal council hospitals and all other inpatient facilities should be reviewed.

– Following the meetings, the central government has ordered facility-level mock drills in various hospitals on Thursday (05 June) to assess the preparedness of healthcare services amid a rising case of COVID-19 infections.
– For the mock drill, all states have been instructed to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators and essential medicines.
– The upcoming drill will assess readiness in key areas, including isolation wards, oxygen supply, ventilator availability, and essential medications. Its goal is to ensure hospitals are well-prepared to respond efficiently in the event of another surge in cases.
– Meanwhile, a mock drill assessing oxygen supply systems (PSA plants, LMO tanks, MGPS lines) was conducted on Monday (02 June).
• In Gujarat, Ahmedabad is currently witnessing the highest number of COVID-19 patients at 281, while a total of 95 COVID-19 cases have been reported from the city’s North-West Zone’s Thaltej, Bodakdev, and 86 cases from West Zone’s Paldi and Navrangpura as of Friday (06 June). According to the government, genome sequencing of COVID-positive patients is being conducted at the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre, Gandhinagar. The sequencing has mainly identified JN.1, LF.7, LF.7.9, and XFG variants. As of now, the state government of Gujarat has not released any health advisory, and the situation is assessed to be under control.
• The Odisha government on Thursday (05 June) confirmed that schools across the state will function adhering to preventive measures when they reopen after the summer vacation. In addition, students with symptoms like a cold will be asked to wear masks at school, while those with more serious symptoms will be advised to stay home and isolate. Surveillance and testing remain rigorous, and officials have reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm.
• A high-level meeting to review COVID-19 preparedness in Nagaland was held on Monday (09 June) under the chairmanship of the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, P. Paiwang Konyak, at the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare. The meeting assessed the current COVID-19 scenario in the state and evaluated the health system’s readiness to manage any emerging situation. The minister underlined the importance of continued vigilance, sustained surveillance, and the implementation of robust public health measures across all health units in the state. Officials also stated that COVID-19 cases remain mild and under control.
• In Telangana five samples of the 10 active cases were sequenced by INSACOG, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium, revealing the presence of new variants. Four samples contained LF.7.9, and one sample contained XFG. XFG is a recombinant variant derived from LF.7 and LP.8.1.2, showing high immune evasion by resisting two major neutralising antibody types. Despite this, its cell-binding ability remains limited. LF.7.9 is an offshoot of the European LF.7 strain, with moderate transmissibility but lower infectivity. XFJ, another recent variant present in the country, has limited available data and is still under surveillance. Doctors note that the symptoms associated with these variants are similar to mild flu, with low severity in healthy individuals. However, infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with comorbidities are advised to take added precautions.
